Zap-A-Gap Glue

Zap-A-Gap Glue is a Cyanoacrylate (CA) based glue.  CA glues are made by many different companies but are relatively the same and come in different mixes and consistencies. Heat and moisture will decrease the shelf life of CA glues. Unopened bottles can be stored in a freezer or refrigerator, but should be used at room temperature. Keep bottles of CA glue in a cool place that won’t be exposed to direct sunlight and store away from bottles of accelerators.

cf 001SThe PACER Company makes a CA that is called Zap-A-Gap. The two most popular formulas of Zap-A-Gap is the Green Bottle which is a thick, slower setting gap filling glue and the Pink Bottle which is a thinner, faster setting glues. The Green Zap-A-Gap is the glue that I prefer because it fills gaps and sets within 5 – 10 seconds. The key to using Green Zap-A-Gap and other CA glues is not to use a lot of glue. The primary reason that CA glue does not bond instantly is that too much glue is being used. A thin coat of Green Zap-A-Gap will bond the foam quickly and the glue should not run.

An accelerator can be used in conjunction with CA glues to make the glue dry faster. PACER makes ZIP-KICKER that is an accelerator for CA glues that can make Zap-A-Gap or any other CA glue bond instantly. Caution should be used when using ZIP-KICKER because of the fumes and that it can generate enough heat that can burn your fingers and cause smoke. PACER makes Z-7 DEBONDER that is used to remove dried Zap-A-Gap and is a great item to have at you desk incase of spills or the inadvertent gluing of your fingers. Most bottles of Zap-A-Gap are sold with an applicator tip called a Z-End or you can purchase them separately. I strongly recommend using the Z-End because small amounts of Zap-A-Gap can be applied at precise locations. The Z-End can be left on the glue bottle for months and the glue will not evaporate. Occasionally the end of the Z-End will have to be cleaned out with the tip of your bodkin.
