Taming Angel Hair

BuzFlyAngleHair 002Taming Angel Hair
Angel Hair is a soft thin metallic material that is used for accent flash or even to construct an entire fly. The material comes in over 50 colors in small clear plastic bags that contain a hank of material secured in the middle with a Zip-Tie. Angel Hair can add a lot of flash with very little bulk and weight.

BuzFlyAngleHair 014The Pinch The Pull
When you use Angel Hair, or other thin flash materials, for accent flash, you do not have to remove it from the bag to use it. Cut the bottom of the bag off slide the tips of the material so they are just sticking out of the bag. If you pinch the Zip-Tie through the bag, you can then pull out the amount of material you need. Pulling the Angel Hair while pinching the Zip-Tie will break it off at the Zip-Tie. BuzFlyAngleHair 015This method works well for most situations that require small amounts of flash. The Angel Hair does not get all over the place and you have very little waste. This method also saves time and keeps the material confined to the bag helping to eliminate waste.

The Fold Back:
To securing Angel Hair, or other synthetics, you can use what I call The Fold Back method for lack of a better term. Instead of tying the material in at the tips, lay the material on fly with some of the material extending forward, apply a few wraps and then fold the forward material back over itself and finish securing. You can also fold the material around the thread and then secure the thread and the material exactly where you want it. These methods prevents the material from pulling out and make it easy to secure. This technique also works with Yak Hair, Krystal Flash, Bucktail, Kinky Fiber and any other materials that you can fold back over it self.

Most materials are not hard to use once you learn about them and how to use them. As you can see, working with Angel Hair is very simple once you learn how to control it and make it do what you want. The more time you spend at your vice experimenting with many different materials and learning how to use and handle them, the more rewarding your fly tying experience will.
